Did you know that the piña colada has been the national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978?
If you want to sample this authentic frozen cocktail or another local concoction, you need to know where to grab a drink when you visit Puerto Rico. San Juan bars and clubs abound, so how do you know which establishments offer the best food and drinks?
Here’s our round-up of the best San Juan clubs, bars, and restaurants to grab a cold drink.
1. La Factoría
Not only is it one of the most popular San Juan bars, but it’s also been voted one of the Top 50 bars in the world. It might not be much to look at from the outside, but once you enter you’ll see why everyone loves it.
There are a total of six hidden passages that lead to separate bars, each with its own unique music, menu, and vibe. We’re partial to their lavender mule made with lavender-infused Ketel One vodka and ginger beer.
2. 7eight7
Heralded as one of the best nightlife concepts in San Juan, 7eight7 Night Club is one of the premier places to party on the island. The doors open every night at 10 pm and they always have San Juan’s best DJs spinning tunes until the wee hours of the morning.
One reason this club is so popular is because of its killer nightly specials. For example, on Thursday nights, ladies enjoy an open bar for only $25. On Friday nights, everyone gets a free shot every hour, on the hour. Click for more info on this unmissable club!
3. The Mezzanine
Want to step back in time to the 1950s Old San Juan? Step into the former home of Pedro Albizu Campos, the man who once plotted to overthrow the US government. In fact, there are still bullet holes in the walls from the FBI’s raid in 1950!
Since 2012, it’s been home to one of the coolest tapas bars in San Juan. Aside from the one-of-a-kind atmosphere, the drinks are sensational — try the Guava Cosmo for a tropical twist on a beloved classic.
4. VC Lounge
Seeking a little quiet luxury? Skip the nightclubs and instead spend the evening inside the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel’s posh VC Lounge. Sink into a leather sofa or plush red velvet chair, or snag a seat on the outdoor patio and enjoy the warm Atlantic breeze on your face.
Oh, in case you’re wondering, the drinks are fabulous too. We recommend the Lady Rosemary, a unique concoction featuring Hendrick’s Gin and Cointreau mixed with egg whites and lavender.
