Peace Lily vs Calla Lily: What Are the Differences?

Have you ever seen a gorgeous, large lily flower in nature, but you weren’t quite sure what it was?

The Calla Lily and Peace Lily are common plants that are perfect to help bring nature indoors. But, there are subtle differences between them that you need to know to have the right one for your home.

Fortunately, we have all the details you need to make a great choice. Read on to learn the differences between a Peace Lily vs Calla Lily.

Plant Appearance

The Peace Lily and the Calla Lily look very different when it comes to planting appearance. The Peace Lily has long, slender leaves that are dark green. The Calla Lily has shorter, broader leaves that are lighter green.

The Calla Lily is much larger and has a more trumpet-like shape than the more linear shape of the Peace Lily. Another difference is the color. The Peace Lily is typically green with white flowers, while the Calla Lily can be a variety of colors.

Native Habitat

One of the most significant is both flowers’ native habitats. Peace Lilies are native to tropical regions of Asia, while Calla Lilies are native to South Africa. This means that Peace Lilies are adapted to hot, humid climates and require more moisture than Calla Lilies.

Calla lilies, on the other hand, are adapted to drier conditions and can tolerate some drought.

Watering Needs

A Peace Lily and Calla lily has different watering needs, with the Peace Lily needing more water than the Calla Lily. The Peace Lily is a tropical plant and needs to be kept moist, while the Calla Lily is more drought-tolerant.

When watering, use lukewarm water and water the soil, not the leaves. The Peace Lily should be watered about once a week, while the Calla Lily can go longer between watering.

Type of Care

The Peace Lily is more tolerant of lower light levels and can even flower in rooms with no natural sunlight. The Calla Lily, on the other hand, prefers bright light and will not bloom unless it gets enough light.

The Peace Lily care is much easier and will forgive you if you forget to water it occasionally. The Calla Lily is a bit more finicky and will start to show signs of stress if it doesn’t get the right amount of water and nutrients.

When it comes to soil type, the Peace Lily will do fine in most potting soils as long as it has good drainage. The Calla Lily, on the other hand, prefers richer, more humid soil that stays moist but not soggy.
