A Parent’s Guide to Handling At-Home Learning

A Parent’s Guide to Handling At-Home Learning

Throughout the recent years, homeschooling and virtual schooling have seen a rise. A survey conducted by the CDC revealed that 45.7% of legal guardians said their children receive virtual instruction. This same survey showed that 23.4% of children are receiving hybrid instruction (partially in-person and partially virtual learning at home).

Another number on the rise is how many of these parents and legal guardians are feeling more stressed out. At a quick glance, at-home learning comes with many benefits. You don’t have to worry about getting your child to school at a specific time or packing a lunch each day.

You also have peace of mind knowing your child’s not exposed to various illnesses. However, learning at home does come with its challenges. To learn how to handle your child going to school at home, continue reading below.

Create a Designated Learning Space

The first step to creating a healthy learning environment for both you and your child is to find a designated learning space for them. Choose a spot in your home that’s away from those busy traffic areas. If this is a shared space, then you can use a large cut-out cardboard piece as a divider.

Allow your child to decorate their learning space how they choose. Ask their teacher for some great ideas and advice on what type of learning supplies this space should have.

Put a Daily Schedule in Place

Your child’s learning from home, which means freedom! Well, not quite. Although your child might not have to stick to a rigorous schedule, there should still be a daily schedule in place.

Create your own schedule that works well for both you and your child. Speak with the teacher to ensure your child meets all of their expectations for the day and don’t forget to include breaks for meals, playtime, stretching, and physical activity.

Print the schedule out and have your child post it somewhere in their learning space so they can follow it.

List Your Goals and Track Progress

Your child will need to meet certain goals throughout their at-home learning experience. Speak with their teacher about specific education goals they should be meeting. Then, sit down with your child and review the behavioral goals you expect from them.

You can incorporate a timer to help them stay on task and a daily progress chart that allows them to track their own progress throughout the day or week. Don’t forget to offer rewards for them each time a new goal is met!

Hire a Professional Tutor

If your child begins to fall behind in their at-home learning, it can feel like a failure on the parent’s part. However, this isn’t always the case. Transitioning from in-person learning to virtual learning is a huge accomplishment for any child.

The process of doing so isn’t always an easy one. When your child needs a bit more support and attention, consider hiring a private tutor to bring those low grades back up!

At-Home Learning Isn’t as Easy as We Expected

Transitioning from in-person learning to distance learning isn’t as simple as some might have expected. At-home learning comes with its challenges, but none that you and your child can’t overcome! Use the helpful tips listed in this guide above to create the best homeschooling experience possible.
