5 Signs Your Car Suspension is Shot

Did you know that the concept of adding suspension to a vehicle dates back to Ancient Egypt? As transport has become more sophisticated, its importance to a car has also grown. But how can you tell if your suspension is on its way out?

Several events could prompt a fix. Read on as we discuss five signs your car suspension is shot.

1. Your Car Is Bouncy

This may sound like a lot of fun, but for anyone who has been in a vehicle like this, you know it isn’t.

The purpose of the coil springs on suspension is to dampen the energy from movement. This means they should cushion the peaks and troughs you encounter in potholes and rough country roads.

The shock and struts are also responsible for allowing these springs to move. If they are stuck or broken, the wheels remain in a static position. That means they often lose contact with the surface, throwing the passengers up and down.

2. Grinding and Cranking Noises

Another sign that you need new car suspension parts is when the car starts to make odd noises. As parts wear away, they can no longer support the strut. This results in metal grinding on metal, which can sound like a screeching or knocking sound.

3. The Car Pulls to One Side

One of the most dangerous signs is that your car pulls to one side when driving. This is particularly bad, as it impacts how you control the vehicle. This can happen in all types of automobiles, including cars with air suspension.

If the car pulls, there are several other factors it may be, including suspension. You should make sure you get the vehicle checked by a professional immediately, who can check the wheel alignment.

4. Front End and Rear

When braking heavily, you may find that the front end dips dramatically. Conversely, if you accelerate quickly, you may find the back end squats extremely low. These are also signs of car suspension system failure.

In these instances, the parts in your suspension are not strong enough to handle the weight of the car and the added pressure from movement. If you are in the vehicle, this causes you to lunge backward and forwards.

5. Uneven Tire Treads

It is the law that you have your treads checked regularly and maintain a certain degree of grip on them. However, one sign of suspension failure is when one or more tires use up more tread than others. This shows uneven weight distribution, and it is most likely to be caused by shock, struts, and springs in the vehicle that are not working to maximum capacity.

Fixing Car Suspension

In summary, bumpy rides, dipping from the body, and loss of control are all signs of car suspension going wrong. Take your car to a trusted mechanic and get it looked over. The problem may only be minor, and very often, a new suspension kit or repair can make a car drive like new.
