Constant nausea can be a nagging force. But there are remedies outside of scripts. Discover these 11 natural ways on how to get rid of nausea.
Back in the 1800s, biologist Charles Darwin wrote, “If not for seasickness, the whole world would be sailors.”
Whether you get seasick or not, you’ve undoubtedly experienced nausea before. Up to 90% of pregnant women experience nausea, and it’s common with many other conditions as well.
Whether from pregnancy, motion sickness, or another cause, nausea can make you miserable. The good news is that you don’t have to call the pharmacy or search your medicine cabinet to find relief.
In this post, we’ll reveal how to get rid of nausea–the natural way. Read on to learn more!
1. Peppermint
Peppermint isn’t just a tasty candy. As it turns out, it’s one of the tried and true natural remedies for eliminating nausea.
One study found that inhaling peppermint essential oil significantly reduced nausea in chemotherapy patients. Researchers believe that something in the scent reduces the body’s desire to vomit.
You can also enjoy peppermint in the form of tea or ingest it in capsule form.
2. Ginger
Ginger is another age-old remedy for nausea, and it works.
Many doctors recommend ginger to pregnant women, cancer patients, and those recovering from surgery. Studies have found that it’s as (or more) effective than prescription nausea medications–without the side effects.
You can eat ginger in its raw form, or enjoy it candied or in tea. You could also inhale ginger essential oil or add powdered ginger to your favorite recipes.
3. Acupressure or Acupuncture
Thousands of year ago, Chinese medicine found a natural cure for stomach woes in the form of acupressure.
The most common point is called the inner frontier gate point, or P6. You’ll find it 2-3 fingers’ width below your inner wrist, between the two tendons.
You can press this area yourself to stimulate the point, or you can wear a specialized wristband that sits on this point. Alternately, you can visit an acupuncturist who will use needles on this and other nausea points.
4. Lemon Water
For some people, citrus takes the edge off a queasy stomach.
Squeeze a wedge of lemon or lime into a glass of water and sip on it to settle your stomach. While we’re on the subject, make sure you’re drinking enough water too, as dehydration can make nausea worse.
Alternatively, you can diffuse citrus-scented essential oils or drink a cup of lemon or orange tea.
5. Bananas
Did this suggestion surprise you? It’s true–one of your favorite fruits may be the perfect cure for your nausea.
Research shows that bananas stimulate the production of mucus in your stomach. This helps to form a natural barrier between your stomach lining and the acidic “juices” that lead to heartburn and nausea.
Bananas are also high in potassium, a mineral that balances your electrolytes and reduces the urge to vomit.
6. Chamomile Tea
If the thought of bananas or ginger makes your stomach turn, try brewing a cup of chamomile tea.
Its mild taste and aroma are pleasant and non-offensive. Research also supports its use to help ease the symptoms to morning sickness in pregnant women.
If you’re craving a little sweetness, stir some honey into your tea, as this can also have a calming effect on your stomach.
7. Spice It Up
You may not have to leave home to find the cure for your nausea. Many soothing solutions are probably sitting right in your own spice cabinet.
Consider trying:
- Fennel
- Cinnamon
- Cumin
- Lavender
- Holy basil
- Aniseed
- Clove
Add a few of your favorites to a meal or brew them in a cup of tea for a calmer stomach.
8. Focus on Your Breathing
When we’re nauseous, we tend to hunch over and draw in shallow breaths.
The opposite may be very helpful in relieving your symptoms. Stand up straight or lie down on your back and focus on opening your chest and abdomen.
Take in slow, deep, steady breaths, breathing in for 10 counts and out for 10 counts. The increased oxygen and stretched position will help your stomach to relax.
9. Get Some Fresh Air
Do you tend to get nauseous while sitting inside? The answer may be as simple as opening a window or taking a brief walk outside.
If you must remain inside, switch on a fan (or air-conditioning, if you have it) to circulate air around the room. It could be that the only thing your body needs is fresh, oxygenated air.
10. Up Your B6 Intake
As many as 1 in 7 adults are deficient in B vitamins. While we can’t get into the benefits of every B vitamin in this post, let’s briefly discuss B6.
Some doctors are now recommending B6 supplements for pregnant women who prefer not to take anti-nausea medications. Research supports B6 as a safe and viable remedy for morning sickness and other causes of nausea.
You can safely take up to 200mg per day, even during pregnancy, with no side effects.
11. Consider Cannabis
If it seems like there’s suddenly a lot of talk about medical cannabis, you’re right. More and more states are legalizing the use of medical marijuana, while hemp-based CBD products are soaring in popularity.
The reason? These cannabinoids are helping people fight anxiety, cancer, nausea, and everything in between. One study found that CBD (a compound found in marijuana and hemp) reduces nausea and vomiting in humans and animals.
