Air-dry clay works if you have some experience, but you’ll need to work fast before the clay dries too much and becomes unworkable.

Create a Solid Foundation

Packing on the clay is the simplest way to do it, but sometimes sculptors roll the clay into thin sheets to cover more ground faster.

Regardless of which material you’re using, you want to build the basic shapes of the statue’s form. If you’re making a human statue, this means building up the muscle mass of the skeleton. Try to focus only on basic shapes even though a part of you might want to dive into creating the texture of the hair. 

You want to avoid creating the details at this stage. You might realize that a section needs to be redone later on and you’ll be forced to recreate those details all over again.

This is the step where you see all of your hard work come to life. The details of a sculpture make it unique and memorable. This is also the step where you’ll want to take as much time as you want.

This is where your initial idea comes together, so don’t rush it.
