Basic Skateboard Tricks Any Beginner Can Master

Skateboarding has been one of the coolest-looking sports since the 70s. If you’re interested in learning how to skateboard then you’ve probably seen videos of some of the greats like Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song. Their skateboard tricks are mind-blowing!

That level of skill might seem a lifetime away, but even the best skateboarders had to start somewhere. If you’re new to skateboarding and looking for some beginner skateboard tricks to get you started, then you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s take a look at some basic tricks you can try out if you’re just learning to skateboard.

Manuals

Once you’ve learned how to use a skateboard and can travel along without any problems, the first trick you should learn is how to manual. A manual is the same as a ‘wheelie’ on a bike.

You either ride on just the back trucks or the front trucks (nose manual). When you’re starting you want to start slow, but not too slow as it will be harder to stay balanced on two wheels. Just shift your weight to the back or front of your skateboard until the opposite wheels come off the ground.

Once you’ve found the right speed for you, just keep practicing until you can travel for longer distances in a manual. This is a great way to develop your balance.

Riding Fakie

Learning to ride fakie might not be a trick in itself, but it opens up the doors to loads of skateboarding tricks as you progress. Riding fakie is just riding backward. So you keep your regular stance, but the tail of your skateboard is pointing forwards.

Riding Switch/Goofy

Similar to riding fakie, riding a switch isn’t really a trick, but it will be an important staple of your future skateboarding tricks. A riding switch involves getting used to riding your skateboard with your feet the opposite way round to your usual stance.

It will feel awkward at first, but it’s worth taking the time to make it feel as comfortable as riding in your regular stance.

The Hippie Jump

The hippie jump is a great trick to learn before you’re ready to ollie as it gets you used to being off the ground while on your skateboard.

It’s simple – ride along on your board slowly and jump. You want to jump forward slightly so you keep up with the board’s momentum. Start off with little jumps and build-up.

Once you get comfortable you can find obstacles that will allow your board to roll underneath while you jump over the top. This is a cool-looking trick that’s easy to master when you’re just learning how to skateboard. Nose Stalls

Nose stalls are a great way to master shifting your weight around on the board. Ride up to an obstacle like a curb and apply pressure to the nose of your board when it goes over the curb. This will stop the board and bring the back wheels off the ground.

Get Started With These Skateboard Tricks

When you’re just getting started, the skateboard tricks that you want to learn most might seem lightyears away. But by mastering simple tricks like these first, you’ll find that you’re teaching yourself the balance and coordination you’ll need to perform more difficult tricks later on.

It won’t be long until you’re learning how to kickflip and boardslide. Just stick with it and have fun.
