Trucks account for 20.57 percent or just over one in every five of all vehicles in operation on US roads.
You’d think that with the rising price of gas and an increased public focus on small hybrid vehicles, there might be fewer of these serious gas-guzzlers on the road. But the fact remains that truck owners appreciate the robust capabilities of pickups, as well as how powerful and practical they can be.
And, the good news is, if you’re interested in buying a truck, some truck models now buck the trend by offering more reasonable miles per gallon (MPG) ratings in the 20 to 27 range.
Want to know the most fuel-efficient trucks on the market? Let’s take a look!
1. Ford Ranger
Whether you’re checking out used vehicles to buy or want a new truck, Ford models are often a good bet, although none more than the Ford Ranger. Although it packs in an impressive 3,500 lbs of towing power, this “entry-level pickup” has a smaller engine and an MPG rating of 22, as well as a much more promising 26 out on the open highway.
2. GMC Canyon Diesel
If you’re looking for fuel efficiency, the GMC Canyon Diesel is one of the best truck models out there. Outdoing even the Ford Ranger with an incredible 26 miles per gallon, this bad boy also boasts the awe-inspiring ability to tow up to 7,700 lbs! Who knew trucks with a good gas mileage could also be so powerful?!
3. Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel
Among the latest 2022 truck models, the midsize truck with the best gas mileage has to be the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel, which is also a four-wheel drive, no matter what engine you choose. While it’s a pricey vehicle, this EcoDiesel-powered Gladiator more than makes up for the financial outlay with optimal fuel efficiency, including up to 28 MPG out on the highway!
4. Chevrolet Colorado 2.8L Diesel
Thanks to its 2.8 L4 diesel engine that offers a solid 24 miles per gallon, the Chevy Colorado is another strong contender on this list. And with an unbelievable 369 pounds of torque and towing capabilities of over 7,000 pounds, the small engine sure packs a punch!
5. Ford Maverick FWD 2L Turbo
2022 truck models don’t come much better than the new compact Ford Maverick, equipped with an even more powerful engine than its predecessors. When paired with front-wheel drive, this 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers 26 MPG and up to 30 MPG out on the highway. Even if you add all-wheel drive, the MPG only drops to a still impressive 25.
Your Guide to the Most Fuel-Efficient Truck Models
Truck models with a good MPG rating aren’t yet a big priority for manufacturers who release four or five regular pickups to every fuel-efficient one.
Although, with this truck buying guide to help you, it should be a lot easier for you to decide which of these trucks with a good gas mileage you’re most interested in.
