4 Key Tips for Planning a Trip to Hawaii

Hawaii is a popular destination so plan your trip in advance. Keep reading for 4 key tips for planning a trip to Hawaii.

Have you ever wanted to take an island vacation? There are plenty of beautiful islands and island chains out there, but one you don’t hear about a lot is Hawaii.

A trip to Hawaii is a great tropical vacation idea, even though you’re technically not leaving the country.

As amazing as vacations are, though, there’s one part that’s always unpleasant–getting ready. Planning a vacation often takes a lot of time and money.

That being said, there are ways to make things easier if you know how. We’ll give you some great tips for planning a trip to Hawaii in the paragraphs below.

1. The Basics

The first part of planning any vacation is deciding when and where you want to go. Remember, Hawaii is made up of multiple islands.

In fact, there are over 100 of them, but only 8 are recognized as major islands. The largest of these islands is called Hawaii, or the Big Island. Next are Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe, in descending order of size.

It’s up to you which islands you want to visit and what you want to do there. You don’t have to have an itinerary, but don’t expect to do everything in a few days.

On the subject of when to take a trip to Hawaii, the weather stays pretty warm all year, with averages ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-80s. Winter still boasts milder weather than summer, with slightly lower average temperatures.

There does tend to be more rainfall in the winter, though.

Winter is also far safer in terms of hurricanes, since over 80% of them, and especially the more severe ones, take place in the spring and summer. Fall is also safe, but the number of hurricanes is significantly smaller in the winter.

In total, there have been 5 tropical storms in the months of January through April in a period of over 150 years. Only two of those tropical storms became hurricanes.

2. Research Before Booking

There are a lot of companies in the travel business. Some can offer great deals on hotels, rental cars, and maybe even flights.

Others are bait for tourists who naturally expect things to be overpriced, or who think they need luxury wherever they go. For this reason, it’s best to do some exploring before you commit to anything.

The same goes for food and attractions. Eat where the locals like to eat. Most of us don’t go to five-star restaurants in our hometowns, and it’s safe to assume that most people in other towns don’t either.

3. Set Aside Time to go to the Beach

You don’t want to get so caught up in trying to see everything that you forget to relax and enjoy the scenery. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Relaxing isn’t all there is to do on the beaches of Hawaii, though. Truth be told, a lot of the fun doesn’t start until you get in the water.

From surfing to snorkeling, to skimboarding, there are a whole host of things to do in the waters off Hawaii. You can catch a wave or see any number of tropical sea creatures, including sea turtles.

4. Plan to See Historical and Cultural Sites

One of the biggest favors you can do yourself on any trip is to try and learn. The world isn’t just interesting landscapes and animals. It’s about the people who have created a life here and created numerous cultures in the process.

For instance, you might want to see the Honolulu Museum of Art or see various temples or heiau created by ancient Hawaiians. Keep in mind that these temples are still held in reverence by many Hawaiians, and should be left exactly how you found them.

A few sites you should take time to see when visiting Hawaii are Pearl Harbor and the memorial to the USS Arizona. Just as important as learning about and respecting other cultures is learning about and respecting our own.

The USS Arizona was one of the ships sunk at Pearl Harbor. Roughly 2,300 people died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Over 1,100 of them were aboard the Arizona.

Pearl Harbor can be thought of as a cultural turning point for Hawaiians and for all Americans. Hawaii wasn’t a state in 1941, and wouldn’t become one until 1959.

Yet, on that horrible day in 1941, they all shared something. An unprovoked attack occurred, and suddenly there were servicemen dead in Hawaii. Now, they all stood at the doorstep of war shocked, saddened, and enraged, knowing that the world had changed forever.

The more we understand each other, the more we understand ourselves. It’s a lesson that we learn more and more as we travel.
